The building opened in 1909, it was called "Ons Huis," and served as a cultural center.
During WW2, the building was used as an emergency hospital. In 1949 "Venster" opened, a "quality" cinema. Lantaren was the name of one of the screening rooms. There were also exhibitions. In the 70s and 80s, many bands performed there, including Depeche Mode, U2 and Sex Pistols. The name changed to Lantaren/Venster. In 2010 LantarenVenster moved to a new building in the Wilhelminakade.
In 2016, Kino was opened. It's only been open for 4 years, but the building has a rich cinematic history.

Kino had to massively renovate the building, as there was asbestos. The two Kino owners, Jan de Vries and Frank Groot (two white men), moved from Amsterdam to Rotterdam to fulfill their dream to open their own cinema.

Anna's parents used to live in Rotterdam and regularly went to LantarenVenster in the 90's, when Kino didn't exist yet. These are tickets from '96 and '97. My parents told me that it looked very different then. It wasn't cosy at all, instead of the dimmed lights there are now, there were fluorescent lights The interior was very minimal and basic.
